This beautifully hand-turned bowl is a true work of art and nature, crafted from spalted sycamore harvested in Illinois. Measuring approximately 11” in diameter and 2” deep, the bowl showcases dramatic black spalting lines—natural patterns formed during the early stages of wood decay, which are highly prized by woodworkers for their striking contrast and organic beauty.
Woodworker Jim Case, father of Mortonite Amy Case Retherford, began his woodturning journey in 2023 following his retirement. Using a vintage Shopsmith lathe and plenty of inspiration from online tutorials, Jim has since turned hundreds of bowls and vases, each revealing the hidden character of the wood he works with.
Each piece from Case Custom Creations is signed, dated, and inscribed with John 1:3: “Through Him all things were made; without Him nothing was made that has been made.” This verse is a humble reminder from the artist that while his hands shape the wood, the true Creator is behind every grain and curve.
Whether used as a functional serving piece or admired as a natural sculpture, this one-of-a-kind bowl is a stunning addition to any home.
